In 1889 he was appointed Kapelmeester and teacher at the School of Music in Den Bosch.In 1893 he became second director (after Willem Kes (1856-1934)) of the Concertgebouw orchestra in Amsterdam and director of the Arnhemse Orkestvereniging in Arnhem.

In 1903 he conducted the first concert of a composition by Gustav Mahler in the Netherlands. Symphony No. 3:
