Rosa Papier was a pupil of Mathilde Marchesi. She worked as mezzo-soprano was from 1881 to 1891 at the Vienna Court Opera. She excelled as a Wagner interpreter and was an acclaimed recitalist. In 1891 she was forced to retire due to illness. In 1892 Rosa Paumgartner became Professor at the Conservatory of the Society of Friends of Music in Vienna and taught singing. The famous Wagner singer Anna Bahr-von Mildenburg (1872-1947) and Helene Wildbrunn and Rose Pauly were among her students.
She belonged to the circle of friends of Gustav Mahler and campaigned for his appointment as director of the Vienna Court Opera in 1897. Married to Hans Paumgartner (composer). The musicologist and conductor Bernhard Paumgartner was her son.

Rosa Papier war eine Schülerin von Mathilde Marchesi. Die Mezzosopranistin war von 1881 bis 1891 an der Wiener Hofoper tätig. Sie brillierte als Wagner-Interpretin und war eine gefeierte Liedsängerin. So trat sie in der Wiener Erstaufführung von Tristan und Isolde als Brangäne auf. 1891 musste sie ihre Bühnenlaufbahn auf Grund einer Krankheit beenden.
1892 wurde Rosa Paumgartner Professorin am Konservatorium der Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde in Wien und unterrichtete Gesang. Die bekannten Wagner-Sängerinnen Anna Bahr-Mildenburg und Helene Wildbrunn sowie Rose Pauly zählten zu ihren Schülerinnen. Sie gehörte dem Freundeskreis um Gustav Mahler an und setzte sich für dessen Berufung zum Direktor der Wiener Hofoper 1897 ein. Der Musikwissenschaftler und Dirigent Bernhard Paumgartner war ihr Sohn.
1955 wurde die Papiergasse in Wien-Liesing nach ihr benannt. Anna Bahr-von Mildenburg (1872-1947) was one of her pupils.
