With a great sense of intimacy he painted his children while they play, read or play. The economic malaise and the growing threat of Nazism make Raphael decide in 1939 to leave for the United States with a large number of his works. The outbreak of the Second World War prevented him from returning to Oegstgeest, where his family still lived. Joseph Raphael would never see his wife who died in 1945.
