Lieban was born the son of a Chasan in Moravia and learned to play the violin in his youth already by Gypsies. Later he attended the conservatory of the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde in Vienna, studied singing with Josef Gänsbacher and came to the local theater as a violinist.
He then sang at the Stadttheater in Leipzig and at the Komische Oper in Vienna as Buffo. In 1881 he participated in the Wagner tour of Angelo Neumann and later sang at the Bayreuth Festival. From 1883 he was a tenorbuffo member of the Court Opera in Berlin; later he also sang at the newly founded German Opera House in Charlottenburg. In 1908, Lieban was appointed chamber singer.
As late as 1933 he sang the mime with over 70 at the State Opera. For guest appearances he has been successfully engaged in many major opera stages throughout Europe. Most recently, he worked as a singing teacher in Berlin. He was married to soprano Helene Lieban-Globig (born March 31, 1866 in Berlin, † 1919 in Szczecin?).
