5. 1881. Jihlava. Mahler's first conducting position was at Bad Hall, a small spa in upper Austria where he performed mostly operettas during the summer of 1880. During the winter in Vienna he completed Das Klagende Lied. In 1881 he became principal conductor at the Provincial Theatre in Ljubljana, where he conducted his first opera, Giuseppe Fortunino Francesco Verdi (1813-1901)'s Il Trovatore.
