« Sehr geehrter Herr!
Vor allem mus ich Ihnen mittheilen, das die hiesige Intendanz keinesfalls fur einen Abend mehr als 400 fl zu zahlen geneigt ist. – Ich brauche wol nicht erst auf die precare Lage unseres Institutes hinzuweisen; sie ist ja leider nur zu bekannt. – Wenn Frau Kupfer auf dieses Gebot einzugehen geneigt ist, so bin ich bereit derselben einen Contrakt anzubieten, wie sie denselben sich erwunscht. Also vom 10. – bis Ende Feber ein 5 maliges Gastspiel / a 400 fl / eventuell dann 2 jahrigen Vertrag 15 Sept. – 15 Dez. / 15 März – 15 May : monatlich 8 maliges Auftreten / jahrliche Gage fur diese 5 Monate 1400 fl. Frau Kupfer ist verpflichtet, samtliche Partieen ihres Repertoirs italienisch zu singen. Ferner muste es vereinbart werden, ob sich Frau Kupfer nicht dazu herbeiliese, etliche Partieen in ungarischer Sprache zu erlernen … sich baldigen Antwort ihr ergebenst Mahler ».

Above all, I have to inform you that the local directorate is not inclined to pay more than 400 fl for an evening. – I don’t need to point out the precare location of our institute; unfortunately it is only too well known. – If Ms. Kupfer is inclined to accept this commandment, I am ready to offer her a contract as she wishes. So from the 10th to the end of February a 5-time guest performance / a 400 fl / possibly then a 2-year contract 15 Sept. – 15 Dec. / 15 March – 15 May: 8 times per month / annual fee for these 5 months 1400 fl. Ms. Kupfer is obliged to sing all parts of her repertoire in Italian. Furthermore, it had to be agreed whether Ms Kupfer should not learn to play a number of games in Hungarian … you will soon get an answer, Mahler ».
