Lieder von (unter) der Erde: Music meets Poetry at Wunderhorn Festival

The Wunderhorn Festival in Leipzig is going to delight late nights from May 19 th to May 22 nd , warming the iconic and historical Moritzbastei Club. Parallel to the Mahler Festival at the Gewandhaus, this unique series of concerts will immerse you in the world of Gustav Mahler and the cultural landscape that influenced his work.

In the manner of after-shows of the concerts in the Gewandhaus, musicians of the Gewandhaus Orchestra will accompany musicians from guest orchestras of the Mahler Festival in playing pieces by Brahms, Mendelssohn, Strauss, von Weber, and Zemlinsky.

What’s more, if the venue and the program weren’t enough, actors Benjamin Mahns-Mardy and Armin Zarbock will recite songs from Des Knaben Wunderhorn, by Clemens Brentano and Achim von Arnim. A book that Goethe himself recommended «for every kitchen of the simple folk and every piano of the learned»: with these songs in their hearts, Mahler and all the great composers featured in the Wunderhorn Festival followed his advice and produced pages of exquisite music.

KLASSIK Underground, the organizer of the festival, aims at breaking down barriers around classical music, offering popular entry points, and experimenting with appealing formats for the younger audiences to enjoy
new experiences in a casual mood.
