Die Altistin Maria Philippi (1875-1944) studierte in Basel bei Emil Hegar, bei Stockhausen in Frankfurt und bei Viardot-Garcia in Paris. Als Interpretin von Bach und Mozart feierte sie zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts große Erfolge in ganz Europa.

Ab 1925 unterrichtete Philippi als Professorin an der Musikhochschule von Köln.
