Reitler studied violin and piano in Vienna, and music theory with Arnold Schoenberg in Berlin (1902-05). First he was music and theater correspondent for the Berlin Vossische newspaper in Paris, after which he worked as an editor and music critic for the Neue Freie Presse in Vienna active; after Julius Korngold’s emigration as a senior.
In 1915 he was appointed director of the New Vienna Conservatory. In 1920 he was with Hugo von Hofmannsthal, Max Reinhardt and Richard Strauss among the founders of the Salzburg Festival. 1938 Reitler had to emigrate to the United States, where he developed the Opera Department of New York College of Music, he conducted from 1940 to 1945. In New York at Hunter College he taught harmony and counterpoint. He founded “Opera workshop” in 1945.
