An international scholar, Dr. Solvik holds a Ph.D. in Musicology from the University of Pennsylvania and a B.A. in Music and Intellectual History from Cornell University. He was born in Norway, was raised and educated in the United States, and has been professionally active in Austria for more than two decades.

Since 2009 Dr. Solvik has served as the Center Director of IES Abroad Vienna, a study abroad institute for US matriculated college students. Before that he was instrumental in setting up the IES Abroad Vienna Music Program, which he has coordinated since 1999, and has also served as lecturer at the Universität für Musik und darstellende Kunst (The University for Music and Performing Arts). His teaching and administrative experience is augmented by his active and productive scholarly career as an expert on Gustav Mahler.

Dr. Solvik is Vice President of the International Gustav Mahler Society in Vienna and under its auspices was invited to create an exhibition for the Mahler composing hut in Steinbach am Attersee, Austria in 2016. This led to the inaugural Mahler Festival in Steinbach am Attersee, now an annual event for which he serves as Artistic Director.
