Four Perspectives on Mahler’s Second

February 12th, 2022

Mahler’s Second Symphony is a work that continues to fascinate audiences, performers, and commentators around the world.

This month’s show will take a look at four very different approaches to this masterpiece: a podcast, a piano transcription, and a listening guide, all of them recent releases, plus a filmic interpretation of the work. Though inherently differing forms of expression, what might these intense examinations of Mahler’s composition have in common?

We will be joined by Aaron Cohen, producer of Embrace Everything. The World of Gustav Mahler and the musical and historical advisor of the series, Marilyn McCoy. The second season of the podcast explores the details of the Second Symphony, movement by movement and takes us inside its texts and key musical moments.

Jason Starr, who has produced and directed a number of films on Mahler’s symphonies, will share with us the insights gained and challenges faced in making Of Love, Death, and Beyond – Exploring Mahler’s ‘Resurrection Symphony’.

The young Alexander Vivero provides a very different avenue into the work: a transcription of the symphony for solo piano. We will ask what motivated this project and hear Alexander perform portions of his rendering of the massive orchestral composition.

Finally, we will take a sneak preview of a book by Lawrence F. Bernstein just released by Oxford University Press: Inside Mahler’s Second Symphony: A Listener’s Guide

Hosted by Morten Solvik
