Program

● Over the course of one remarkable week in April 1897 Vienna experienced four events that would reshape the political and cultural life of that city.
● On the 3rd of April, the death of Johannes Brahms and the founding of the Secession, and on the 8th of April, the election of Karl Lueger as the mayor of Vienna as well as the appointment of Gustav Mahler to the Court Opera.
● In those few days, one era passed while another emerged, bringing momentous changes that would be felt long into the 20th century.
● Gustav Mahler can be seen in relation to all of these developments, from his acquaintance with Brahms to his interactions with the Secessionists through Alma’s family and circle of friends. Noteworthy, too, is the rise of anti-Semitic tropes in musical criticism in the wake of Lueger’s rise to power and its role in the public’s reception of Mahler as conductor and composer.
● Our guest for this program is the social and music historian, Christian Glanz.
● Play now and join us as we take a look at this propitious chapter of Vienna’s history and Mahler’s life.

Guests

Christian Glanz, Music and Social Historian, Professor and Director of the Mahler Center at the University of Performing Arts, Vienna
