When we think of Mahler’s orchestral works, we naturally recall hearing them on recordings and in concert halls, performances that bring us the sounding realization of these scores. But, aside from questions of interpretation such as tempo and expression, are we really hearing what the composer had in mind? Are there aspects of the sonic experience that we are missing?

These are some of the questions raised by looking carefully at performance practice. From this perspective, it becomes apparent that surprisingly much has changed in the century between Mahler’s time and ours, especially with regard to instruments and performance styles.

On this program we are joined by conductor, cellist, and educator, Philipp von Steinaecker, whose Originalklang-Project of the Gustav Mahler Academy helps us delve into the differences that have emerged over time and demonstrate just what it means to assemble an orchestra of original instruments from around 1900.
