• Notes: The society to promote the art of music. First performance of Das klagende Lied in Amsterdam. Mahler’r repeat performance scheduled for the next day was conducted by Willem Mengelberg (1871-1951), because Mahler (already before arriving in Amsterdam) had decided to withdraw. However, it seems that Mahler was unable to provide a suitable and convincing explanation, so he asked his secretary at the Vienna State Opera Orchestra, to forward a “fake” telegram, summoning him back to Vienna on official matters (telegram at the “Haus-, Hof- and Staatsarchiv” in Vienna)
• Mahler was very positive about Willem Mengelberg (1871-1951) conducting Strauss.
