Toblach is a comune/Gemeinde (municipality) in South Tyrol in northern Italy, located in the Puster Valley about 70 kilometres (43 mi) northeast of the city of Bolzano, on the border with Austria.

At once both the cultural centre of Alta Pusteria/Hochpustertal valley and the gateway to the Dolomites, Dobbiaco is located amidst two nature parks at the entrance to the wildly-romantic Höhlensteintal valley.

Ever since his first visit to the region in 1897 Gustav Mahler was impressed by the inspiring and almost unreal beauty of the region and returned regularly for short excursions. After his daughter Maria died in Maiernigg in the summer of 1907 he first fled to nearby Schluderbach, and during the summers of 1908-1910 settled in the Trenkerhof near Toblach to compose his final three major works.
