In 1889 he was appointed Kapelmeester and teacher at the School of Music in Den Bosch.In 1893 he became second director (after Willem Kes (1856-1934)) of the Concertgebouw orchestra in Amsterdam and director of the Arnhemse Orkestvereniging in Arnhem.

After twelve years in Arnhem her returned to Amsterdam as second director (after Willem Mengelberg (1871-1951)) of the Amsterdam Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra (RCO/KCO). Also Director of the Dutch Opera in Amsterdam. He composed works for strings and orchestra, male choir and piano.
