45th Gustav Mahler Music Weeks
Toblach / Dobbiaco
12-07-2025 – 05-08-2025
A Remarkable Partnership: Gustav Mahler Music Weeks Toblach/Dobbiaco and the Mahler Foundation
From 1908 to 1910, Gustav Mahler spent his summers in the scenic town of Toblach, where he composed some of his most profound works: Das Lied von der Erde, the Ninth Symphony, and began his unfinished Tenth. In tribute to his legacy, the Gustav Mahler Music Weeks were founded in Toblach in 1981. For over four decades, this extraordinary festival has offered a one-of-a-kind annual homage to Mahler’s music, drawing enthusiasts from around the globe.
This year’s edition marks the 45th anniversary and runs from July 12 to August 5, 2025, presenting an inspiring lineup of symphonic, ensemble, and chamber concerts. The festival will welcome world-renowned musicians such as John Eliot Gardiner and Mario Brunello, as well as rising stars like Benjamin Appl and Francesco Tropea. Most importantly, the Ninth Symphony, composed in Toblach/Dobbiaco in 1909, will return to its place of origin on July 18 with the Jena Philharmonic under Simon Gaudenz. Together, they will transform Toblach/Dobbiaco into a vibrant meeting point of breathtaking nature and transcendent music.
Another major highlight is the international symposium, organized by the Gustav Mahler Research Centre Innsbruck/Dobbiaco, which will explore a compelling new theme in Mahler studies: the role of humor in his compositions. The symposium will feature thought-provoking lectures by esteemed musicologists including Federico Celestini, Morten Solvik, Anna Stoll Knecht, and Alice Verti, examining the grotesque, satirical, and self-reflective dimensions of Mahler’s work. Additionally, philosopher and former Venice mayor Massimo Cacciari will offer a keynote address on Karl Kraus’ commentary on World War I in The Last Days of Mankind.
We warmly invite you to be part of this exceptional celebration of music, scholarship, and landscape. Experience the magic of the 45th Gustav Mahler Music Weeks — a festival like no other.
