The Mahler Hour – Mahler’s Life in Song: The Early Works

March 16th, 2024

Program

On March 2024, we began a special series entitled “Mahler’s Life in Song”, co-
hosted by Thomas Hampson. This series is a chance to explore the great
composer’s output in Lieder but also the ways in which his life was reflected in his
creativity. The setting will be an informal talk between two passionate Mahlerites who have dedicated years to thinking about and presenting on this topic.

We have a lot in store for you: the circumstance behind the compositions, Mahler’s
interventions in the texts, and musical details in the songs themselves. We will look
at manuscripts, compare the songs with other compositions, including his
symphonies, and hear about challenges for the singer in performing Mahler’s songs.

In our first installment we took a look at the early works. We also considered what
motivated Mahler to dedicate so much of his inspiration to this genre.

Play now for a lively journey that will take you inside Mahler’s creativity in a firsthand look at their workings and wonders!

Hosted by Morten Solvik | Co-hosted by: Thomas Hampson, Baritone, Special Artistic Advisor to Mahler Foundation (https://hampsongfoundation.org/)
