- Notes: It was at the funeral service of Hans von Bulow (1830-1894) that Mahler was inspired to employ Friedrich Klopstock (1724-1803)‘s psalm “Auferstehung” (“Resurrection”) for the finale of his Symphony No. 2. The psalm was set to a melody by Karl Heinrich Graun (1701-1759). Immediately after attending the funeral service in the St. Michael’s Church, Mahler hurried to the Stadttheater, where the orchestra had assembled in the room adjoining the loggia. When the cortege passed, the march sounded through the open doors: Siegfried’s Tod, Funeral March, from Gotterdammerung. At 12 pm.
