Also: Parkhotel, Maritim Hotel Mannheim.
Already in the 1870s it was decided in Mannheim to carry out a city expansion. In this connection, it became necessary for the water supply to build a water tower. In 1885, the site of the Mannheimer Wasserturm (Water tower) was selected. The adjacent area was to be one of the “most beautiful places in the world”.
The water tower (see City of Mannheim) was built shortly after the construction in 1889 as the landmark of Mannheim. In 1901, the Parkhotel, now “Maritim Hotel Mannheim” was completed south of the Wasserturm. It was not until the construction of the Festhalle Rosengarten (built 1899-1903) and the Kunsthalle (1907) that the final design of the square was agreed. To the city anniversary in 1907 (300 years of Mannheim town), the square got its present appearance.
During the bombardment of Mannheim in the Second World War the water tower was hit and the area of ??the Friedrichsplatz, including building development, was severely damaged. In 1963 the water tower was restored. In 1964 the reconstruction of the Friedrichsplatz was completed with the restoration of the corner houses at the mouth of the Augusta plant.
