- Notes: The idea of giving the symphony twice seems to have been a sudden impulse of Willem Mengelberg (1871-1951). Alma Mahler is mistaken however, in claiming that Mengelberg conducted the repeat performance. He was present of all of Mahler’s rehearsals, making comments and instructions and entering them into his personal copy of the score. Mengelberg’s live recording of the symphony, made 35 years later and based on his annotated score is probably the closest we can come to Mahler’s own reading. Link to live recording 11-1939.
