Erben is mentioned by Gustav Mahler (1860-1911) in a letter to Justine (Ernestine) Rose-Mahler (1868-1938). Letter sent from Hamburg after 20-12-1892. Letter 283.
Erben was also a student of Julius Epstein (1832-1926).
After his studies in Vienna he was conductor in Frankfurt.
Anton Bruckner (1824-1896)‘s Te Deum was premiered in the Kleiner Musikvereinssaal in Vienna on 02-05-1885, with soloists Frau Ulrich-Linde, Emilie Zips, Richard Exleben, and Heinrich Gassner, with the choir of the Wiener Akademischer Richard Wagner Verein, and Robert Josef Erben (1862-1925) and Joseph Schalk substituting for the orchestra on two pianos. Hans Richter conducted the first performance with full orchestra on 10-01-1886 in the Großer Musikvereinssaal of Vienna.
