HIGHLY ESTEEMED
IMPERIAL AND ROYAL DISTRICT COURT

According to her birth certificate obtained from lglau on 15th April 1889 my sister Justine Mahler was born on 15th December 1868 and will therefore be very shortly 21 years of age.
Considering that my sister is economical, a good housekeeper , industrious and so dependable that she can confidently be entrusted with managing her own possessions; and considering that my sister, after the death of our mother a few days ago, is going to leave lglau and take up permanent residence in Budapest and share a home with me there; and considering that the management and possible selling off of the small estate she inherited from our Father would involve disproportionately high costs if it had to be done under the active supervision of the Board of Guardians. Accordingly I and my sister jointly undersigned submit the following request:

That the Highly Esteemed District Court declare my sister Justine Mahler to have attained her majority and transmit the Order to my representative Dr. G. Spitz (...?) in lglau.

Everything went well. Arthur Nikisch (1855-1922) will perform Nos. 1 and 2 in the Gewandhaus - from Symphony No. 2, and 4 and 5 from Symphony No. 3 in BerlinErnst von Schuch (1846-1914) is performing the whole of Symphony No. 2. The local intendant listened too. It even pleased him personally. Scheidemantel will sing the Fahrenden Gesellen! I am travelling overnight to Vienna. Affectionately, g.

Fine autograph postcard signed ("g"), to his sister, Justine (Ernestine) Rose-Mahler (1868-1938), with autograph address panel, a little creased, postmarked, Dresden, 03-06-1896.

Some of the excitement of Mahler's feelings is revealed in this message, written in a small space, in pencil, between the views of Dresden. Three movements of Symphony No. 2 had been performed in a concert in 1895 and it had been given complete in 12-1895. The whole of Symphony No. 3 was not played until 1902.

  • The Berlin performance took place on 09-11-1896.
  • The Leipzig performance took place on 14-12-1896.
  • In the end Schuch performed only the second, third and fourth movements of Symphony No. 2 on 15-01-1897.
  • Intendant: Graf Nikolas von Seebach (1854-1930).
  • Baritone: Karl Scheidemantel (1859-1923).
  • To Fraulein Justine Mahler in Munchen, Schellingstrasse 70, at Rudolf Krzyzanowski (1859-1911)'s. Justine was en route to Steinbach.
