As the son of the influential Jewish reformist Salomon Sulzer, Joseph Sulzer graduated from the Conservatory of Vienna in 1869 as one of Karl Schlesinger’s best students and was then hired as a solo cellist for Italian opera and as a teacher at the Bucharest Conservatory, where he stayed for four years. In 1875 Sulzer got a job in the orchestra of the Vienna Opera Theater, which he filled for three years until he had to quit the job for health reasons.
After his recovery, he perfected his game with David Popper and was called as a solo player at the Vienna State Opera in 1880. From 1882 to 1885 he was a member of the Joseph Hellmesberger Jr. (1855-1907) String Quartet.
