Friend of Richard Strauss and Gustav Mahler. Critic for Berlin Vossische Zeitung 1894–1933. Wrote incidental music to plays (some by his brother in law Gerhart Hauptmann (1868-1946), orchestral works, and songs.

Year 1897. 14-01-1897. Letter by Gustav Mahler signed ‘Gustav Mahler’ to a unnamed correspondent (‘Verehrter Feundin’, ‘Dear Friend’ (female)). Discussing a concert that will take place in Dresden the next day, where Movements 2, Movement 3 and Movement 4 of Symphony No. 2 and will be performed, along with the Movement 2 (“blumenstück”) of Symphony No. 3, noting that his presence at the rehearsal is requested, and referring to the critic Max Marschalk (1863-1940).
