  1. From 10-04-1861/22-07-1861 until 16-07-1861/28-07-1861. On his first journey outside Russia, Tchaikovsky found Hamburg to be “Incomparably better than Berlin”.
  2. From 29-12-1887/01-1888 until 30-12-1887/01-1888. To attend a concert conducted by Hans von Bulow (1830-1894).
  3. From 05-01-1888/01-1888 until 10-01-1888/01-1888. To rehearse and conduct a concert of his own works at the Konventgarten (08-01-1888/01-1888), including the Serenade for String Orchestra, the Piano Concerto No. 1 (soloist Vasily Sapelnikov (1867-1941)), and the Theme with Variations from the Suite No. 3. There were cordial meetings with Daniel Rahter, Josef Sittard, and Theodor Avé-Lallemant, who “Almost with tears in his eyes exhorted me to leave Russia and settle in Germany”
  4. From 26-02-1889/03-1889 until 04-03-1889/03-1889. To conduct his Symphony No. 5 at a Philharmonic Society concert (03-03-1889/03-1889), At rehearsals he met Johannes Brahms (1833-1897), Josef Sittard, and Willy Burmester. “My new symphony was an enormous success, and everyone without affectation treated me as an old and dear friend”.
  5. From 17-05-1891/29-05-1891 until 18-05-1891/30-05-1891. Returning from his American tour on the steamship Fürst Bismarck, Tchaikovsky stayed overnight at the Hôtel Saint Pétersbourg.
  6. From 06-01-1892/01-1892 until 09-01-1892/01-1892. Attending rehearsals and a production of Yevgeny Onegin at the Hamburg Opera Theatre (07-01-1892/01-1892), conducted by Gustav Mahler (1860-1911). Concert: 1892 Opera Hamburg 19-01-1892.
  7. From 25-08-1893/09-1893 until 29-08-1893/09-1893. Attending a production of Iolanta at the Hamburg Opera Theatre (26-08-1893/09-1893), conducted by Gustav Mahler (1860-1911), as well as a performance of Leoncavallo’s opera Pagliacci in the second half of that evening’s double bill, with Bertha Forster-Lauterer (1869-1936) as Nedda. Tchaikovsky stayed at the house of Bernhard Pollini (1838-1897). Concert: 1893 Concert Hamburg 18-11-1893.
