Gustav Mahler buys with the help of Carl Julius Rudolf Moll (1861-1945) a plot of land (around the time of the heart-rending crisis over Alma’s infidelity) on which to build a new holiday- or perhaps retirement-home. High on the Semmering, an hour or so south of Vienna and accessible by a spectacular railway.

1913 Semmering: Alma Mahler (1879-1964), Carl Julius Rudolf Moll (1861-1945) and Oskar Kokoschka (1886-1980) discuss plans to build a house. It will be small, with 8 rooms, in the middle of the plot. It will be her “second” home.
1914 “Die Windsbraut” by Oskar Kokoschka (1886-1980) is finished.
1913 Semmering: The house is ready (autumn 1913). Anna Sofie Moll-Schindler-Bergen (1857-1938) does the decoration.
1913 Semmering: Oskar Kokoschka (1886-1980) makes a fresco on the chimney. Alma Mahler (1879-1964)’s new house had a huge fireplace, over which Kokoschka painted a fresco depicting himself and Alma amidst flames, she gesturing heavenward and he hovering in the hellfire below:

1913 Semmering: The Death mask of Gustav Mahler (1860-1911) arrives. Kokoschka futilely objected to the ensconcing of Mahler’s death mask in a place of honor at ‘Haus Mahler,’ as the home was called, and after an interlude of relative calm, tensions in the relationship escalated.
