During the following night he became very ill, and after a serious operation he convalesced for two weeks in Abbazia. Mahler therefore cancelled the two remaining philharmonic concerts and withdrew his candidacy as conductor of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra (VPO) for the next season after his return to Vienna in early April. At the board meeting on 28-05-1901 the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra (VPO) elected Joseph Hellmesberger Jr. (1855-1907) to be Mahler’ successor.
