House Gustav Mahler Maiernigg 1901-1907 (Villa Mahler, Maiernigg No. 31). Mahler with his three-year-old daughter Maria Anna Mahler (Putzi) (1902-1907) on the stone terrace of the lakeside Villa Mahler he built on the Wortersee in Austria. Maria would die tragically two years later from scarlet fever and diphtheria. That same year Mahler himself was diagnosed as having a heart ailment.

68. 1905. Berlin. Mahler with conductor Oskar Fried (1871-1941), who led a performance of Mahlers Symphony No. 2 on 08-11-1905. Fried’s 1924 recording of Symphony No. 2 was the first of a Mahler symphony. On the day following Fried’s concert, Mahler went to Leipzig to “record” four of his compositions on rolls to be played on the Welte-Mignon automatic piano. These rolls are the only recordings of Mahler as a performer. The work included Symphony No. 4Movement 4: Lied: Das himmlische Leben (Sehr behaglich)Symphony No. 5, Movement 1: Trauermarsch (Funeral March). In gemessenem Schritt. Streng. Wie ein Kondukt and the songs Lied 2: Ich ging mit Lust durch einen grunen Wald and Lied 2: Ging heut’ Morgen uber’s Feld. Earlier that summer Mahler completed his Symphony No. 7.
